WYDAD CASABLANCA’S BREATH-TAKING VICTORY QUALIFIES THEM FOR THE FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP UAE 2017

After having defeated Egypt’s Red Devils this weekend with an impressive score of 2-1 on aggregate in the CAF Champions League final, Wydad Casablanca have proven themselves to be Africa’s finest securing their second victory and first qualification for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Emotions were high amongst fans at the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca as they witnessed the Rouges et Blancs lift the trophy for the first time in 25 years since they last won in 1992. Wydad Casablanca will make their debut in the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2017 this year when they face CONCACAF champions, C.F. Pachuca, in the quarter-final round in Zayed Sports City on 9 December at 5pm (UAE time).

“Congratulations to Wydad Casablanca, the Local Organising Committee are looking forward to welcoming the team for the first time in Abu Dhabi next month,” said His Excellency Aref Hamad Al Awani, Tournament Director of the Local Organising Committee (LOC). “Tickets are available to the quarter-final round between Wydad Casablanca and C.F. Pachuca on 9 December at Zayed Sports City. Don’t miss the chance to watch the CAF Champions League winners make their debut in the FIFA Club World Cup.”

Walid El Karti scored the winning goal in the second leg with a header in the 69th minute from a precise cross delivered by Acraf Bencharki. As expected, Al Ahly started the match on the front foot as they were chasing the tie following the 1-1 draw in the first leg in Alexandria. Going into the second leg in Casablanca, Wydad knew a goalless draw would be enough to see them through.

Wydad head coach Lhoussaine Ammouta changed his tactics in the second half as his side maintained possession in their attacking half to minimise Al Ahly’s chances. Eventually the tactics paid off as El Karti latched on to the end of Bencharki’s cross to put the result beyond doubt.

Wydad Casablanca’s incredible run to the CAF Champions League final saw them defeat CAF Champions League 2016 Champions, Mamelodi Sundowns in the quarter-final and 2016 Algerian League Champions, USM Alger in the semi-final.

The 14th edition of the FIFA Club World Cup will be held in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain from 6 – 16 December. A total of eight matches will be contested, between seven regional champions for the ultimate club accolade.

Five teams have qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2017 to date: Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca, Spain’s Real Madrid C.F., New Zealand’s Auckland City FC, Mexico’s C.F. Pachuca and UAE’s Al Jazira. The remaining two teams – the AFC Champions League winner and the Copa Libertadores winner – will be determined between 25 and 29 November.
